Type of Cables
In a structured cabling system, you can go for twisted pair, coax or fibre optic cables. Twisted pair cables comprise a pair of insulated copper wires twisted together. One wire transmits the signals while the other serves as the ground reference. Twisted cables protect against signal degradation, but there is a limit on the distance that the signals can be transmitted. Coax cables are made of a solid core insulated wire, a metal foil conductor and a protective plastic cover. They have a higher data carrying capacity than the twisted pair, although the single core makes them ideal for telephone connections. Lastly, fibre optic cables transmit data in the form of light. They have the highest data carrying capacity and are ideal for fast internet connections, reliable telephone communications and television signals. Even though they may be more costly, fibre optic cables are the best alternative.
The central switchroom for your structured cabling system should be conducive for the functioning of the telecommunication equipment. The room should be well ventilated by natural or artificial means to keep equipment from overheating. It should also be easily accessible for repairs, maintenance and new installations.
